I've heard about Kompot from friends who have been raving about the place after their visit to Odesa. and they were right. first, what is Kompot? Kompot is a sweet drink that is cooked by adding fruits and sugar into the water and bringing it to boil. that was the most common non-alcoholic drink of the Soviet times (then, juices were almost unavailable with exception of tomato, apple, birch tree, and in rare occasions, plump and tangerine) served during breakfasts, lunches and dinners. in the time of deficit, our moms and grand moms made bottled kompot to treat kids with the sweet and nutritious drink during winter time. typically, kompot was bottled in a one-litter jars, which you will see on display in the decoration of the restaurant. There are very few things I miss from the Soviet time, as most things were unavailable anyway, but sampling pelmeni in the broth with sour cream (optional) in Kompot hit me with a slight nostalgia for simplicity of food and presentation, which Kompot captured very well: sauces and sour cream served from one-litter jars, sugar cubes in tumblers.Favorite Dish: My mouth doesn't stop while thinking of pelmeni (with mixed meat) in broth. it's been a while since I enjoyed them so much. Cherry strudel was also fine, may be a bit dry to my taste. A regular-size cappuccino, much bigger than usually served in Ukraine, was unbeatable. I hope one day they will open Kompot in Kyiv. I will be their frequent customer #1.
