Pisa

Viareggio Carnival

For five days between the end of January and the beginning of March, the small town of Viareggio (30 min from Pisa) is overrun by masks and floats of all shapes and sizes. People of all ages join the hustle and bustle of the carnival that's teeming with musical performances, dance, as well as food and drink. It's open to everybody, so feel free to put on a costume and join the fun. Be on the lookout for the Burlamacco, the official mask of the festival; he is dressed in a long red and white checkered suit, a cocked hat and a long black cape.
