The relatively small museum is a pleasure to visit. The modern interior features several halls with modern glass cabinets with spotlighting and excellent descriptions in both English and Bulgarian. There are even illustrations and graphs to help your understanding.

The periods covered are Prehistory, early Thracian culture, gold treasures from Thracian burial mounds near Plovdiv, a coin collection and statues and frescoes from Roman Plovdiv (Philippopolis). A life-size copy of the breathtaking Pangyurishte treasure - over 6 kg of gold vials, rhytons, plates and more - is perhaps the most attractive display.
