Rakowice-Czyżyny Airfield

This large expanse of greenery northeast of the centre of Kraków is one of the oldest permanent airfields in Europe. Established in 1912, it was Kraków's primary airport until 1963. Since then the largely undeveloped and wild space has basically functioned as a local park, with lots of greenery and the remains of a few airport buildings. The original concrete runway is still visible and can be used for light planes and helicopters during emergencies, or events like the Małpolska Air Show. Part of the historic airport is now occupied by the Kraków Aviation Museum, while the Cogiteon Science Centre was built on another parcel. The large open space also plays host to summer music festivals and other events.
