Although most people head to the Baltic Sea beaches of Jūrmala or Vecāķi when the sun deigns to show itself in summer, a beach of another kind is only a tram ride away from the city centre in Mežaparks. Just walk down the main pedestrian street from the Riga Zoo and make your second right to find the beach at Ķīšezers. A seasonal café and portable toilets are available here as well as a playground and a jetty for fishermen, but bear in mind that you have to do a fair bit of walking to get wet as the lake is quite shallow here. Another good beach can be found at Cabo Cafe.
