Prices of imported goods in Latvia tend to be inexplicably high, but
local crafts, food and
alcohol are still relatively cheap and can make
shopping in Riga a real treat. For amber and silver
jewellery, not to mention
traditional crafts such as linen and wool apparel and tablecloths as well as ceramics, the Old Riga street vendors on Skārņu iela, Līvu laukums and the beginning of Kaļķu iela are a safe bet. For
fashion and local boutiques, walk the length of Tērbatas iela and some of its side streets. However, for big international brands, several shiny
shopping centres are also available and they often come in handy on Sundays when most small shops are closed. Some can be found right in the
old town and the
city centre, but you’ll have to travel a little farther afield to find Riga’s
mega malls, which are glittering retail palaces on the edge of Riga. Duty free may apply at some shops, but you’ll have to ask the staff to be on the safe side.
