The epicentre of contemporary Śródka, the district takes its very name from the weekly markets that took place here on Wednesdays ('Środa') for over 700 years. Or did they? Actually Środka's original market square was one block to the southeast of here, and basically lost to history when Wyszyńskiego Street was built in the 1960s.

Nonetheless, Śródka's new market square displays plenty of charms, arguably the foremost of which is its most modern addition - a huge mural overlooking the square, whose 3D perspective adds depth, colour and character to the area. Inspired by a 1920s photograph, the mural by Radosław Barek was completed in 2015; you can see a similarly fabulous mural of his in Jeżyce at ul. Słowackiego 62.

Across from the mural is St. Margaret’s Church, dating prior to 1231, which features a stunted Gothic tower outside and the 17th-century chapel of St. Philip Neri inside, the latter of which prompted the Philippine Order to build their first monastery in PL across the street (today a music school).

Although markets no longer take place here, Rynek Śródecki is a lovely place to take a rest in the garden of 'Do Środka' restaurant.
