The book Mirakelen van onze lieve vrouwe in ’s-Hertogenbosch (Miracles of the Virgin in ’s-Hertogenbosch) offers dozens of stories about miraculous occurrences that are attributed to this ancient statue. The intimate Lady Chapel, however, is a place for prayer or for lighting a candle and should be treated with respect. Mostly locals come here to pray, but an increasing number of foreign Catholics have made it a pilgrimage destination. The dark wooden benches and the grey paintings may give a cold first impression, but the colourful stained-glass windows and the statue of the Virgin Mary make up for it. The history of this religious monument is rather turbulent. In 1380, the wooden statue was narrowly rescued from being burnt and was taken to St. John’s Cathedral for safekeeping, where it was restored by Brother Wouter. In 1629 it was moved to Brussels where it was much adored, but over two centuries later in 1853 it was returned to ‘s-Hertogenbosch where it remains today. On Sundays opening times are different depending on the mass.
