The Kursaal is a postmodern auditorium and congress centre designed by Rafael Moneo hosting art exhibitions, dance, opera and concerts. Opened in 1999, it is located on the shore next the Zurriola Beach and was designed to represent “two beached rocks”. Quite an impact between this stunning vanguard building that’s at odds with the palatial architecture on the other side of the coast. Nevertheless, the building is a symbol of the transformation of the trendy Gros neighborhood, and was awarded the Mies van der Rohe European Architecture Prize for best European building in 2001.
