Located in the Old Town, at the foot of the Urgull Mountain, the outstanding San Telmo Museum is devoted to the Basque culture and history from prehistoric times to modernity. It has just reopened its doors after a thorough renovation. The former 16th century Dominican convent has been restored and extended with a building of contemporary and avant-garde architecture, creating a very interesting mixture of old and new.
Offering visitors an overview of Basque culture, the diverse collection -exhibiting more than 26,000 historic artifacts, is presented in different departments such as fine arts, history, archaeology, and ethnology. The fine arts collection exhibits a wide array of paintings, drawings, engravings, and sculptures. All are accompanied by audiovisuals from the best creators on the Basque scene at the time.
