San Sebastian

Parte Vieja (Old Town)

Parte Vieja     more than a year ago
Located at the foot of the Mount Urgull, the Old Town of San Sebastian is one of the most popular places to see and be seen for both tourists and locals alike. San Sebastián’s Old Town dates back to medieval times but much of it was rebuilt after a fire devastated the city in 1813. The heart of the city is a maze of quaint cobblestone narrow streets oozing with excellent pintxo bars (especially tasty in this area but quite expensive…). In fact, The Old Town is known for having the highest concentration of bars in the world. Exploring the Parte Vieja is one of the best things to do in San Sebastian to get a real feel for this culturally rich and lively city. The center of the Parte Vieja is the stunning Plaza de la Constitución a neo-classical square built around the former City Hall with its arcades and balconies (which was the setting for bullfights in the 19 century). Notable buildings nearby include the impressive baroque Basilica of Santa Maria del Coro and the gothic church of San Vincente, the oldest city church that has a richly carved retablo dating to 1584.
