Situated half way along the Royal Mile , this impressive looking church is the High Kirk of Edinburgh. Founded in 1124 it predates many of the buildings in the old town and has quite a turbulent history till it finally becomes the Mother church of Presbyterianism in 1560. It continues to be a working church but visitors are welcome inside to admire the magnificent stained glass windows including the 1985 addition above the entrance as a memorial to the great Scottish poet Robert Burns.
You can pick up a self guided tour leaflet for £1 and there is also a tour to climb the wooden clock tower (£6)
