It wasn’t that long ago that staying in a hostel in Skopje meant rubbing shoulders in a grotty kitchen with the kind of people you’d think twice about saving in a fire. Thankfully things are improving, with more and more backpacker-style places opening all the time and major inconveniences such as curfews being a thing of the past.
