Burek, a filo pastry treat layered with a choice of either minced beef, cheese, spinach and occasionally something tomato-like and hard to define, is the universal and ubiquitous Balkan snack that simply has to be tried when you’re in Skopje. Cheap as buttons, wrapped in paper and best consumed hot with a small container of cold drinking yoghurt, find it for sale in small outlets all over the city.
