When Kranj’s main cemetery was moved from the area adjacent to the Church of St Kancijan to what is today known as Prešeren’s Grove as a result of reforms undertaken by Emperor Joseph II, the ossuary chapel was also demolished, but the thousands of skeletal remains contained below it remained. Rediscovered and painstakingly excavated during the 1970s, today this eerie sight is once again open to the public. Visits can be arranged at the Gorenjska Museum in the former city hall building just down the street.
