Located in the very heart of the city, within only a few minutes' walk or less of the main square, Mercator Centre and the tourist office, Hotel Paka is the only proper hotel in or around Velenje, and is a fine one at that, boasting four-star facilities, a great restaurant and excellent service. Originally built along with the rest of modern Velenje in 1959, the building itself is actually a protected historical monument, as it was designed by the famed Slovene architect Rorhman, the only representative of the Functionalist school in the country. The hotel long-served as the centre of social life in Velenje and the accommodation of choice for important visitors from throughout Yugoslavia. More recently it was extensively renovated and modernised in 1998.
