Founded in 1860, the American College of Sofia is one of the oldest American educational institutions outside the US. The college offers English-language secondary education for both Bulgarian and international students, grades 8 -12. Fully accredited with the Ministry of Education in Bulgaria, the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and the International Baccalaureate Organization. It is considered 'the elite school' for bright Bulgarian students. Prospective Bulgarian students may sit an entrance exam in Bulgarian after Grade 7. Bulgarian graduates receive Bulgarian and US diplomas. Admitted international students attend a program designed to meet international standards and specific student needs. In grade 11 international students begin a two-year IB curriculum and receive a US diploma and either an IB diploma or certificates.
