From hats to handbags, furniture and homeware, this city has plenty of small workshops and boutique studios known for their talented craftsmanship and dedication to design and many of them are now selling their wares online.

Department stores, boutique shopping centres and most especially, markets, have all been affected by the great Coronavirus lockdown, which in turn hurts the many small businesses that they support. Many have now taken their marketplaces online to provide more opportunities for customers to see and buy their products. Here are some great local market places to support online.

The Box Shop
The Box Shop is an eye-catching cube of a building at the top end of Soweto’s famous Vilakazi Street built entirely from shipping containers. A chic space, The Box Shop is a business incubator designed to promote new and up-and-coming Soweto-based brands, and give opportunities to small businesses, selling a fabulous collection of Soweto fashion labels, skin care products, and accessories.

Started in 2001 by Siphiwe Ngwenya, Maboneng Township Art Experience is a unique tour company and community initiative that gives township artists a way to exhibit their work by displaying it in people’s homes. While their tours around the Joburg township of Alexandra are currently unavailable they have launched a colourful online store hosted on Red Bubble that ships internationally (as well as locally of course) and sells a wide range of gifts made by artists from Alexandra, ranging from homeware and wall art to clothing and accessories.

Victoria Yards
To support the many artists and artisans who have their studios and showrooms within the fantastic Victoria Yards complex, a new online shopping experience has been set up to provide more opportunities for people to shop the brands based at Victoria Yards if they are not able to visit in person.

Bryanston Market
Bryanston Market is open to the public every Saturday from 10:00-13:00 and they have also been steadily improving their online store as well, packed with everything from beaded works to African superfoods, clothing and jewellery.

Rialheim specialises in fun and functional ceramic design items that are uniquely South African, with an updated retro feel. Started by Master Weaver Stuart Holding in 1998, Mungo Designs features an exquisite range of natural fiber woven textiles, all locally milled in Plettenberg Bay, which make great gifts loved for their balance of contemporary design and traditional weaving techniques. Passionate about preserving the traditional art of weaving everything is made using only repurposed and antique looms. You'll struggle to find more beautiful blankets, throws and 100% linen bedding and bedcovers than those made by Mungo. The label is also renowned for their signature flat weave towels which come in a range of geometric designs.
