Joe's Butchery

Joe’s Butchery is one of the most popular shisa nyama (the Zulu term for grilled meat) restaurants in Alex. Shisa nyama is uniquely South African: patrons go to a butchery, buy uncooked meat, then braai the meat over an open fire or have someone braai it for them, and eat on the premises. Modern shisa nyamas also sell beverages and prepared side items, like pap (maize meal porridge) and salad. Joe’s Butchery seating is casual and outdoors; a DJ spins tunes on Sundays. Parking is tricky.
