Originally a dumpsite adjacent to the Bezuidenhout Park, the Siyakhana Food Garden Project was founded in 2005 by former dentist Professor Michael Rudolph, quickly expanding from a one hectare food garden that supplies fresh fruits, vegetables, maize and herbs to nine child welfare organisations and local NGOs, into a training and research hub and demonstration site.
Siyakhana transformed barren and clay-filled ground to a working farm through permaculture with at least 16 crops in rotation at a time. All the produce is organic and the farm features kitchen staples like potatoes and cabbages alongside aromatic herbs like basil, mint and sage.
For those looking to start their own garden, Siyakhana also stocks a range of seedlings, pot plants and gardening basics like compost and mulch. Look out for the monthly Garden Club where little ones can learn to start their own gardens and get the experience of “running a farm”.
