Since its founding in 1990, the Standard Bank Gallery has established itself as one of Johannesburg's finest art galleries. Aside from its corporate collection, Standard Bank Gallery hosts a range of exhibitions with a focus on, but not limited to, contemporary South African art.

One of the few non-commercial gallery spaces in the city, the gallery has featured works by Irma Stern and Gerard Sekoto, with standout exhibitions including the Picasso and Africa exhibition in 2006, as well as solo exhibitions presented by Standard Bank Young Artist Award winners. As the gallery is not bound by sales of works, the exhibitions featured have far more room to experiment and push boundaries, which always makes them a must-visit.

With the Standard Bank Art Lab opening on Nelson Mandela Square, programming at the main gallery in Marshalltown has slowed down, with it being reserved for more large-scale exhibitions.
