Cádiz Cathedral

The undoubted grandaddy of sightseeing in Cádiz is the city’s cathedral. A monolithic marvel of the Roman Catholic faith, work on the cathedral began in 1722 but it wouldn’t be finished until 116 years later. Saying that, the vastness of the place gives a good understanding as to why this took more than a century to complete. Known to history as the ‘Cathedral of the Americas’, the church was built during the city’s golden period, as the wealth of international trade between Spain and the Americas flooded into Andalusia and made this one of the wealthiest parts of the world. That wealth is best seen through the cathedral’s dome, a gleaming golden piece of opulence that shines bright above the city. Be sure to climb to the top of the tower while you are here, as you simply won’t get a better view of the city.
