Built in 1672 on a small bit of land that was jutting out into the sea, the Candalaria Bastion started life as another piece of Cádiz’s intricate defensive network as the city reaped in the benefits of Spain’s forays into the Americas. All this was done and dusted by the time the 20th century came around so the bastion was refurbished and changed into a cultural centre, home to a consistently engaging rolling schedule of temporary exhibitions and engrossing live performances.
