Unlike most other cities, classical music doesn't disappear in Lucerne during summer - the 'Lucerne Festival in Summer' hosts dozens of real highlights. The Lucerne Festival is an institution in Lucerne, bringing some of the world’s best musicians, conductors and composers of classical music - and other genres - to the lake side. Since 2003 the summer festival has been opened by the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, since last year conducted by Andris Nelsons and - new this year - Bernard Haitink. Humour is the theme of the 2015 Summer Festival, intended to clear away stubborn prejudices. They want to show how enjoyably entertaining classical music can also be, be it with the elaborate punchlines in the music of Haydn, the angry satire in Shostakovich’s symphonies or the colourful collage in Prokofiev and Stravinsky. See www.lucernefestival.ch for the daily programme.
