Davit Gareja

more than a year ago
Davit Gareja lies on the border with Azerbaijan but is a viable day trip from Tbilisi. The site comprising a complex of old monasteries spread over a large area. It is a remote, semi-desert landscape of rolling hills and grassland which is covered with flowers in early summer. The two most important monasteries are Lavra (the only one still inhabited today), and, on the hill above it, Udabno, with its beautiful frescoes. Lavra was the first monastery, founded in the 6th century by Davit Gareja, one of the 13 ascetic Syrian fathers who came to Georgia to spread Christianity. The hike to the top of the hill above the monastery is quite steep, but the views are well worth it. The sight of an eagle soaring above might also reward your efforts. To get there You can arrange a taxi form Tbilisi for about 120 Lari. Or use Gareji Line service and take a shared shuttle/marshrutka for 25 Lari per person. In both cases the driver will wait while you explore the complex.
