Fort of São João do Arade

  R. Dr. Coelho de Carvalho 8, Ferragudo     more than a year ago
Cast your mind back; it is the 15th century, you are a local leader doing your best as the regime of King John II grows around you, establishing the Portuguese monarchy and exploring the world as he goes. You need to protect your town, to build a fortress that tells the rest of the world to stay clear. Of course, you don’t build it hoping that it’ll become a charming tourist attraction a few centuries later, but every little helps. The Fort of São João do Arade is a gorgeous stone castle on top of a hill between the beaches of Angrinha and Grande, making for quite the image. Ferragudo (Lagoa) is the town to look for.
