Encompassing two full 18-hole golf courses, as well as a 9-hole mashie course, the grounds of The Fairway Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort in Randpark are so sprawling and lush, fringed by views of Joburg's rolling tree-filled ridges, that looking out onto them feels like you are nestled within an expansive park or nature reserve, not a city suburb.
The best views are found from up high at the hotel's elevated High Ball Craft Bar. The setting is informal with a choice of long shared tables, bar stools and discreet low, cushioned seats at private tables by the balcony edge.
The bar specialises in local craft gins. The gins all come with extensive descriptions, which somehow seems to only make choosing even harder (although if you are looking for Joburg brands we particularly recommend Ginifer and the Ginologist), and you are free to choose your own pairings. Also look out for the South African small-batch artisanal rum Mhoba (perfect as a Cuba Libre) or pick from one of the many good craft beers on offer.
