Tirana’s oldest surviving Catholic church was built in 1865 as a gift from the emperor Franz Joseph. Closed in 1967 at the start of the regime’s campaign against religion, the building functioned as a cinema until the early 1990s. For a Catholic church, the interior is incredibly modest. The newer St. Paul’s Cathedral is now the main Catholic church in town.
