Although Trakai’s train station is slightly further away from the centre, the train’s generally a much more civilised way of getting there. Taxis sometimes wait at both stations for new arrivals and charge around €2 for the short journey to the centre. Failing that, and regardless of whether you choose to arrive by bus or train, expect a long walk—20 minutes or so if you’re fit—to reach the main sights. The train station is no longer staffed, so you need to pay the conductor on the train when you travel back to Vilnius. To reach Trakai by road, take the A1 (E85) highway west out of the city, followed by the A4 in the direction of Druskininkai, then the A16 (E28), which takes you the rest of the way. Driving time depends on traffic, but usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes. A taxi, if called in advance, will cost somewhere in the region of €30.
