Transylvania's Fortified Churches

Saschiz (Keisd)

DN13, Saschiz     more than a year ago

A village where most of the houses are veritable architectural monuments, Saschiz is another Fortified Church in Transylvania. It has a clock tower with coloured tiles, inspired by the one in Sighisoara.

The evangelical church in this village was built to honour King Stefan I of Hungary and is a massive, hall-type church built of stone n the Gothic style. The sacristy tower is also part of the defensive system, found under the same roof of the church and is 16 times taller than the defence floor. Only four towers have survived: the School, the Munition, the Priest and the Voivodal Tower, and the fountain in the middle of the 65-meter-long fortress, which is said to be connected to the centre of the village through a secret tunnel.

Tourists visiting the area are most interested in traditional products such as jam, specifically rhubarb, fir or peppermint honey as well as special home-made bread.
