Absolute serenity, although it hasn’t always been that way. Duži Monastery came into being at the end of 17th century, when the destruction of Tvrdoš necessitated a change of location for its monks. Things didn’t exactly get any easier here, but Duži has largely represented a place of peace for the Orthodox. The set up is a curious one — you have to actually descend to the monastery — but it shines because of it, offering something different to those willing to explore a little. Duži is found 12km outside of Trebinje, and if you’re lucky you’ll get a cup of coffee and some sweets for your troubles.
