These famous stairs have had a different name in just about every era of their existence. Voronts’kyi-Giant-Boulevard-City-Richelievs’kyi Stairs received their newest title, Pot’omkits’ki, following the success of the silent Soviet film “The Battleship Potyomkin”. In the film’s pivotal scene, the Tsar's Cossacks march down the stairs and massacre a crowd of fleeing civilians. The stunning views shown in films and photographs definitely diminish the in-living-colour experience and many visitors find themselves at the precipice of the first step thinking “Right. Stairs to the sea. Next sight please.”
