Vau I Dejës

Sapa Castle ruins

Nënshat     more than a year ago
Sapa Castle, 12km south of Vau i Dejës, was first mentioned in Vatican documents in 1052, and upgraded to a bishopric in early mediaeval times. Tartar invasions in the 13th century destroyed the castle though, and currently, the sturdy and simple Cathedral of Saint George of Sapa stands on the hill, surrounded by ruined old fortification walls, with the Monastery of Carmelite Sisters on the hill opposite.
