Vienna In Your Pocket city guide

A new year in Vienna brings with it a new season of culture, exhibitions and music in this city which never switches off. Popular as a weekend destination Vienna charms all visitors from the moment they arrive. And yet there is so much tosee and do here that the charm never wears off. Indeed, to get the best out of the Austrian capital you should try and stay a little longer: most weekender’s leave disappointed, not with Vienna, but with the fact that they have been able to to see so little of one of the great imperial cities. At this time of year Vienna begs to be explored. Of course, it might well be slightly chillier than at other times (to put it mildly) but this is also when the city is quite possibly at its emptiest. The queues for the major sights, museums and palaces are all far shorter than during busier periods, and finding tickets for cultural events is never usually a problem. As such, if you are reading these lines then you can congratulate yourself on choosing the best time of year to visit. A few events to flag up for you (for the full list, see the What’s On pages): Vienna Calling: A History of Pop Music at the Wien Museum is a must see, while the Masterpieces of Architectural Drawing at the iconic Albertina is one of the best exhibitions we’ve seen in years. Monet to Picasso (also at the Albertina) is another event well worth your time. As we were saying: to get the best out of Vienna plan a longer trip. A couple of days is never enough. If you are on a short stay, we can guarantee you this: you’ll be back soon.

We at Vienna In Your Pocket aim to bring the best of this city to you, but we are well aware of the fact that we can’t cover every event, every restaurant and every cafe. As such we would love to hear from you: if you discover a great place you think should be included in our guide, do feel free to drop us a line. Meantime, enjoy Vienna.
