With a population of little more than 1,000, the sleepy village of Vrutok approximately 10km southwest of Gostivar offers a handful of distractions if you’re in the area, not least due to the fact that its primary claim to fame is that it’s here that the mighty Vardar river begins its long and winding journey. Near the point at which the river begins is the compact St. Michael the Archangel Church, which is often closed but that’s definitely worth a look inside if you’re lucky enough to arrive when it’s open, plus there’s also the Panorama restaurant complete with knockout traditional food and great views of the mountains.
