Sofia may not be as breathtakingly beautiful as some other European capitals, but it still has plenty going for it: a compact city centre with pretty Neo-Classical and Secession buildings, antique gold treasures in the museums and Roman ruins dotted all over the place. And the gold domes of the cathedral against the backdrop of snow-covered mountains on a clear day is truly a sight to behold!
