Lithuanian

There are essentially two types of Lithuanian restaurant in Lithuania. The first and most obvious variety features pigtailed waitresses in national dress serving plates of potatoes and beetroot soup in an atmosphere reminiscent of an old barn. The second is less easy to pin down, and is perhaps best described as a restaurant or café serving predominantly but not exclusively Lithuanian favourites in an atmosphere you won’t find anywhere other than in Lithuania. Rather than insult the best intentions of the good restaurant owners of Šiauliai and call the former of the two Folk restaurants, we choose to list both types of restaurant together.

Juonė Pastuogė
Come to Šiauliai, don’t come here, and consider yourself a sinner. Arguably the city’s most famous if not notorious establishment, Juonė Pastuogė’s genius is manifold. Essentially your classic, wood-encrusted, folksy traditional Lithuanian restaurant and bar, find it bristling with hardcore bumpkins of every persuasion, hell-bent on stuffing their faces with cepelinai and pigs’ ears and bouncing around on the tiny upstairs dance floor to the rhythms of the live folk bands who play here so often. Summertime sees two outdoor courtyards open for even more adventures. Highly recommended.

Handy for the Water Sanitation Museum and one of the cheapest options in town for classic Lithuanian canteen food, unfortunately the menu and the staff function in Lithuanian only, meaning you’ll need an interpreter to eat here. The lunch menu is practically giveaway.

A goldfish bowl on the bar, old maps of Lithuania on the walls and a gentleman with an impressive moustache nursing a bottle of beer in the corner all point to the fact that this is your classic Lithuanian restaurant. Not the type of classic Lithuanian restaurant featuring waitresses dressed in peasant costumes and combine harvesters screwed to the walls mind you. Baffling to the uninitiated but worth a go if you like an adventure, try the full portion of cepelinai if you’re feeling brave.

Folksy furniture, fresh flowers on the tables, an intriguing set of mosaics on the walls and an old-fashioned, homely atmosphere provide the backdrop for a simple restaurant dedicated to the ancient art of filling people to bursting with honest peasant cooking. The menu is a cavalcade of nationalis [...]
