For almost 50 years, the Albanians were at war with themselves, believing (or at least pretending to believe) they were fighting to defend a Socialist paradise. The reality, as everyone now knows, is somewhat different. Unlike for example the three Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, occupied by Soviet Russia for a similar amount of time, the story of Communism in Albania is a strictly internal one, and it’s only recently that any effort has been made to confront the recent past. Several worthwhile examples have emerged in Tirana.
