Even the king Vittorio Emanuele III was present on 28 April 1924 for the inauguration of the Santa Chiara dam. This event was highly important as closing off the river Tirso had formed Lake Omodeo, the largest artificial basin in all of Europe at the time. The popularity of the lake has grown exponentially over the years thanks to the rich flora and fauna and the wild beauty of the natural scenery. Among the villages along its banks, Sorradile, headquarters for the tourist information consortium which is responsible for promoting the area, is well worth visiting not only in virtue of the splendid views over the lake, but also because of the picturesque old town with its pink and grey trachyte houses.
