Zandvoort was first mentioned around 1100 and throughout the ages the village primarily depended on the fishing industry. During the Middle Ages, the coastal area around Zandvoort was controlled by the Lords of Brederode, until their power gradually vanished in the late 17th century. In the early 19th century, Zandvoort slowly developed as a beach resort and many of the rich and famous of that era came here to relax next to the North Sea.
