Almost too hip for its own good, this Parisian-style bakery/bistro is ideal for early risers, or those who enjoy a glass of wine after work.

Step into Charlotte and you might not be certain if you've wandered into a Parisian back-street bistro or a self-conscious fashion shoot. Here the clients are almost indistinguishable from the staff as well-bred hipsters break bread together at a central, communal table while their aproned friends scurry up and down the stairs with rattling trays of tea, coffee, pastry, homemade honey and jam jars. Perfect for breakfast (served all day), the menu is built around the delicious bread and pastries baked on-site, and includes French classics like Croque Monsieur and creme brulee, gourmet cheese and meat platters - all accompanied by great coffee or wine. The high ceilings and wall-length windows give Charlotte an open, sociable atmosphere, which either makes up for or explains the sometimes spotty service - we'll let you decide.

The worst service ever. Food may be good, but does not justify long waiting time, offensive waiters, general chaos for tables outside. During 1h spent there with friends we haven't got our breakfast, not even coffee. There are plenty other good places within walking distance, so don't waste your time for this one.

I discovered this gem during my visit to the Euro's football, shortly after the cafe opened. Their omelettes cannot be improved on-strongly recommended, as are the pastries and the many kinds of fresh bread. The French-style ambience is created by the pleasant background music plus the inspired use of the huge wooden table. This enables total strangers to get to know each other briefly as they devour the inexpensive snacks on offer. Glad to say I'm looking forward to my next omelette at the end of September.
