The Coolest Cafes in Košice

more than a year ago
Befitting a city this charming, this youthful, this energetic, Košice has just about as good a roster of cafes as you’re going to get in Slovakia. This is a city that embraces everything that makes it special, free of the neurosis of the past and focusing both eyes firmly on what is ahead of it. Is that a somewhat overblown way to introduce a load of cool cafes? Sure, but we’ve typed it now. These are the coolest cafes in Košice, which we mean in that un-ironic way, which makes them even cooler, or something like that. You get the point.

Cardio Caffe

Košice might not have a huge amount of cafes that open early in the morning, but this isn’t a bother when you consider Cardio Caffe. Located down one of the many side streets that jut off of Hlavna, this charming little coffee house serves some of the best brews in town that do the job when it comes to a much-needed morning shot of caffeine. Beans, beers, chocolates and more are also available to takeaway, but we’ll take a slow Colombian in the morning any day.

Bølge.

Sometimes we think we’re tired of the whole ‘hygge’ thing, then we step foot in a place like Bølge. and all is forgotten. Scandinavian chic allied with quality coffee is always going to get the thumbs up from Team IYP, and Bølge. takes the cake as Košice’s premier joint for such things. There are also some fantastic beers available, craft brews from all over the continent, and some rather interesting local lemonades (honey and coriander? Sure, why not…).

Halmi Place

If you’re unsure where to find us in Košice, the chances are we’ll be at Halmi Place. Stroll through the passage off of Hlavni at number 21, take a left before the umbrellas and stroll up the grand staircase, into a co-working coffee-drinking space of breathtaking magnificence. If you close your eyes tight enough, you might just be able to imagine being some sort of grand old noble, but we’re happy to sit with a cold lemonade, hot coffee or whatever else and live in the now. Quite possibly our favourite place in town.

Šálka Kávy

The sewing table furniture and vintage-obsession might be a little tired at this point, but Šálka Kávy seems to transcend the gimmick with an authenticity that most other places would kill for. It allows the typewriters and pianos to be appreciated for the pieces of historical technology that they are (aesthetically stunning pieces at that), as good quality coffee and plenty of breakfast options are enjoyed.

Clematis Coffee & Tea Shop

Coffee, tea, service, charm, decor, style, did we mention the service? Clematis Coffee & Tea Shop really does stand out from the crowd when it comes to the latter, providing assistance in deciphering the confusing world of speciality tea and the less confusing world of fine, fine coffee. You can also buy leaves and beans to take home, although we recommend making the most of this experience.
