Gate #2 of the Gdańsk Shipyard

The #2 gate of the Gdańsk Shipyard is where Lech Wałęsa stood to announce to the waiting crowds the deal that had been struck with the Communist government in 1980. Listed as a historical monument, the image of the gate decked in flowers and photos of Pope John Paul II is one of the most enduring of that era, and even today you’ll still see them placed here regularly. The gate was the scene of clashes in 2012 when the Lenin Shipyard name was put back over the entrance as part of the making of Andrzej Wajda’s film ‘Wałęsa,’ when protestors covered it in red paint.
