Standing tall above Jelsa on Račić Hill is the spectacular Church of Our Lady of Health, a 16th-century structure that watches over the town like a protective and loving parent. There is more to that than simple imagery; the church (completed in 1535) is dedicated to the protection of mariners, who looked in this direction for guidance during challenging times at sea. Those journeys are less tumultuous today but the church remains as aesthetically inspiring as ever, and extensive renovation works just over a decade ago ensured a sense of calm around the building. The walk up to the church gets the blood flowing, but its history makes it worth it, and the views are as delightful as you might assume. If you happen to be here in late November, good news: the church celebrates its feast day on November 21.
