If there were a prize for the most romantic church on the island, Jelsa’s Church of St John would walk home with the crown, no questions asked. The late 17th-century Baroque-style chapel is hidden in the streets, gorgeously woven into the fabric of Jelsa with style and grace. Of course, “hidden” isn’t entirely accurate; everyone knows where it is, but there remains a playful joy in walking into the little square and discovering the chapel all over again. The church is surrounded by some of the oldest homes in town, adding another layer of history to Jelsa’s most beautiful sacral structure.
