Poljica is an inland village on Hvar, located 14km east of Jelsa, 22km from Stari Grad, 39km from Hvar Town, and 37km west of Sućuraj. It sits 157 metres above sea level and is the first settlement in Eastern Hvar known as “Plame,” which is believed to stretch from Jelsa to Bogomolje. It isn’t clear when Poljica came into being as a permanent settlement, but the first written record of the village dates to 1407. There is a small prehistoric hillfort on a spur in the hills above Poljica to the south, and there are also ancient burial mounds among the fields. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people here, primarily olives and grapes, although tourism is an increasingly important source of income for local families.
