Svirče sits in a little corner beneath the highest peak on Hvar and the UNESCO-listed Stari Grad Plain. The architecture in the village follows the formula found across the island, with stone houses, little stone pathways, and picturesque courtyards transporting people back to past times. The village's name is believed to derive from “svirati,” which means to play music, and it is widely understood that Svirče’s original settlers headed here to make beautiful sounds. Another theory suggests that the name comes from “svir,” which means “water source.” The playful theory holds the most water, and art lovers will find plenty more to love in the shape of Josip Makjanić’s playful sculptures.
