Zastražišće is located on the eastern side of the island between Poljica and Gdinj, around 20km from the centre of Jelsa and at an altitude of 195 metres above sea level. It consists of many hamlets and coves. The village's name comes from its vital strategic position, and it has long played an important role in protecting the island. On the nearby Vela Glava hill, the island’s main watchtower was constructed. Vela Glava still serves a purpose as a watchtower in the modern age but for fires instead of enemies. Today, the population is primarily engaged in agronomy and tourism. During the summer months, restaurants are open in the coves of Vela Stiniva and Pokrivenik, where you can try top-notch Dalmatian specialties. There is also a post office and a grocery store in Zastražišće.
