Kassel In Your Pocket

It sounds a little like a Grimm Brothers fairy tale...

Every five years, for exactly 100 days, the central-German city of Kassel awakes from its slumber like a frog in springtime, kissed to life by the thousands of visitors of the documenta art exhibition, all looking for inspiration, enlightenment and a bit of magic among the many exhibitions and events.

dOCUMENTA (13) in 2012 was a huge success, and a few new permanent artworks adorn the city, but there are still plenty of other reasons to visit Kassel. There's the elegantly rebuilt city centre, some excellent museums, the lush parks and good shopping opportunities.

We highly recommend visiting Kassel's crowning glory; the magnificent Bergpark that spills downhill from the Hercules monument, west of the city centre. Spend a fine day wandering around there, perhaps combining it with a trip to one of the fairy-tale towns around Kassel that the Grimm Brothers also visited when they lived here.

For all other information you need to sleep, eat, drink and be merry in Kassel, this first English-language online city guide has plenty of suggestions. Browse it for detailed information about public transport, events, hotels, restaurants, bars, sights and shops. For those all-important restaurant reservations, we have listed the contact details of the best places to eat as well.

It's time to kiss that frog - enjoy Kassel.
