Hokusaia's greatest fame was brought by a series of colourful woodcuts "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji", among them the "Great Wave in Kanagawa", especially beloved by Europeans.  The design often appears on pottery, as well as T-shirts, calendars, photo wallpapers, and other everyday objects. Japanese woodblock printing uses many different forms of wood to produce a single multicolour print. Japanese surimono is part of the exhibition, printed from original woodblocks from the Edo period, from the turn of the 18th and 19th century. The exceptional precision and unusual technique give the three-dimension illusion. Hokusaia used various painting techniques, creating his own unique style.
